In a touching tribute, the Hackensack School District in New Jersey honored the life and legacy of a beloved educator, Mrs. Lillian Whitaker, who passed away in December 2024 after nearly five decades of dedicated service. The community, students, and staff gathered this week to celebrate her memory by renaming a street in front of her school as “Lillian Whitaker Way.”
Remembering a Lifelong Educator
Mrs. Whitaker spent an incredible 47 years as an educator and served as the principal of Nellie K. Parker Elementary School. Over the years, she made a lasting impact on thousands of students, teachers, and families in Hackensack. Her leadership, kindness, and passion for education were felt by everyone who walked through the school’s doors.
To honor her legacy further, the school also dedicated a new vestibule in her name, ensuring her presence will continue to be felt in the building she helped shape.
A Community’s Love for Mrs. Whitaker
Known lovingly as “Mother Teresa” of the classroom, Mrs. Whitaker was celebrated not only for her professionalism but also for her warmth and compassion. She was the kind of principal who made everyone feel at home.
“She was a beacon of love, grace, purpose, and discipline,” said Tara Edmonds, President of the Bergen County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. The tribute highlighted Mrs. Whitaker’s ability to lead with heart and purpose while never compromising on values.
A student expressed what many felt: “She was a very special person because she was always so loving and kind. She always made sure this place was home for everyone and that no one felt left out.”

The unveiling of “Lillian Whitaker Way” was more than just a sign—it was a symbol of a legacy. Fellow educator Tony Jackson said, “You can’t walk past the sign and not bring her to mind without being moved.”
This special dedication will continue to remind generations of the values she stood for—kindness, discipline, inclusion, and love.
