Turtleback Zoo Offers Engaging Homeschool Classes for Kids Ages 6–12

If you’re looking for a fun and educational outdoor experience for your homeschooler, the Turtleback Zoo in West Orange has just the thing. Designed for children between ages 6 and 12, their monthly homeschool classes aim to improve scientific literacy while helping kids explore the natural world in a hands-on setting. The next class is scheduled for May 14, and spots are limited, so early registration is recommended.

Learn About Animals in an Outdoor Classroom

These special homeschool classes are held once a month on Wednesdays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Berson Family Center. Each session dives into key science topics through interactive lessons and outdoor exploration. Weather permitting, children will have the chance to visit South Mountain Reservation, the Reservoir, or the Zoo itself as part of the class.

The upcoming May session will focus on animal adaptations — teaching students how different creatures express themselves, how their bodies are structured, and how their size can help or hinder survival. The program blends classroom learning with real-life examples, making it both informative and fun.

What Parents Should Know

The classes are drop-off only, and are limited to 20 students per session to keep the learning environment focused and personal. Parents can drop off their children as early as 10:50 a.m., and pick-up time is strictly at 1 p.m. Be sure to arrive on time, as a late fee of $10 for every 15 minutes past pick-up time will apply.

Students are asked to come prepared for the day. That includes:

  • A notebook and pen
  • A refillable water bottle
  • Comfortable clothes suitable for outdoor learning

Unless there is thunder or lightning, the class will be held outside, so dressing appropriately for the weather is key.

Class Fee and Additional Details

The cost for each session is $30, which does not include separate admission to the zoo if you wish to visit afterward. Keep in mind that spots fill quickly due to the small class size, so it’s a good idea to secure a spot as early as possible.

The Turtleback Zoo’s homeschool classes are a great way for kids to connect with nature, learn about wildlife, and build their science skills in a relaxed, outdoor environment. With engaging lessons, field trips to natural spots, and a small group setting, these sessions offer a rewarding experience for any young learner. If your child enjoys animals and science, don’t miss the next session on May 14.
